I’m always leery of marketing that says “the hottest”. And though curation is getting used to death, it speaks to a more artful and creative experience. Creativity requires a conversation in which all persons communicate, not just the audience and their expectations. The creator leads the conversation and addresses the audience based on HOW they interact, but doesn’t only give them what they want. In my opinion the creatives lead them into spaces unknown and under referenced.
Djs, singers and bands alike have the daunting task of taking back spaces, in which we have overly catered to audiences (in order to monetize) and lost site of the history telling and leading into future sounds. I never really signed up to be your personal playlist, as a job we have (some) obligations to please. As creatives, we have obligation to LEAD. Those who follow may not be numerous (at first), but understanding the essence of vibrations allows the music to guide.Without intimidation of knowing WHERE the journey will lead, but trusting the vessel to guide and return the audience safely, is what I hope people start to seek in the under known creators. In this period of painfully mindless popularity, the goal should be staying MINDFUL.
