MUSIC, MY LIFE & MORE...

What i Think of Djing

 today…

I’ve never sought to be true to anything more than art and it’s creation. The desire to monetize, for me has always come from being passionate about my crafts and the desire to seek the opportunity to share them with those who value the creation and organization of what is created. We are at an interesting place where fame and the pursuit of being famous has seemingly over shadowed the culture of ideation and creation. Djing particularly has now become akin to being a server in a restaurant. I don’t blame technology for creating more convenient ways to bring music to people. I blame technology for creating the space that says everyone should partake in creating a narrative for normalizing the need for attention doing … nothing. With the creation of music that has spanned beyond the time of any living human being, the way of social media has dwindled the value of the medium and those who seek to create and perform from a genuine space of passion to nothing more than serving an under average meal. To me this suggest venue owners can now make djs staff members and pay an hourly rate close to servers, bartenders and line cooks (maybe). Of course providing minimal sound and dj equipment for those who seek to play top 40s, to those who simply want to hear music. This would be basic audio that is standardized by pop culture. The thought of this is painful, writing it is a whole level of low. As a lover of musicians, singers, songwriters and the recording process of making this art, my association with djing has been to amplify sounds that showcase what I’ve considered as necessary as air. Djing was not my first love, though music has always been associated with the process of living. The process of djing for me has been akin to mixing colors, mediums, and materials to present to people. This could be considered service, but of original ideas over duplicating.

Djs & Musical Responsibility

I'm aware that every dj has musical obligations. You're being paid by people who have expectations of what you will spin. There are very few places where you get to "do you", without a request or an innate knowing of what you SHOULD reference (based on your audience).
Last night was a true testimony to the idea that we have to SPEAK for good and different music. This is not to suggest that it can't speak for itself, though with all the distractions, it can go unheard. Streaming dj sets via fb live or any other platform gives you a great opportunity to "chat" and introduce new or different tunes to people and SELL, yes sell them. Selling what you like about them and why people may find them enjoyable, are great ways to inspire research and hopefully PURCHASING of these artist's work.

Last night I had the pleasure of spinning the small room at Renaissance Bronzeville. I played a mix of soul, neo soul and rnb with dashes of hip hop. A group of folk came in and anchored themselves at the corner of the bar where I was playing. I overheard the sister say, "I'm so intrigued by what she's playing and what's going to come next". I tried not to be nosey but it most certainly helped further the musical journey. Before they left, I introduced them to a few folk that I thought were dope based on hearing parts of their conversation;). Muhsinah and Chantae Cann are the two voices that came to mind based on her reaction to me dropping  Lalah Hathaway and Robert Glaspers rendition of Jesus Children of America (originally by Stevie Wonder).

Amazing conversation and connectivity happens when you step from behind the decks to further the narrative that music sets. Whether djing in a venue or streaming a set (especially), be responsible and TRY to push the dialogue, in order to get people open to power that music and it's creators have.

While there are still people who think that being a DJ is an easy job, I know that you guys have been rooting for your talent, and that's even harder because you need to rely on yourself for you to produce money from it. Being a DJ is a he thing not just in party places, but events too outside bard because they are in charge of music set up and mixing. Their mistakes will surely be noticeable that's why they are not allowed to commit at least one. Can you imagine having a job which does not give you the right to commit any mistake?

    fathom spits

when i come to the jam
    know who i am
    aint bout the flim flam
no i dont give a damn
    about where you been
    or what you rocking
    when the tunes hit
    we'll see whats popping
    not stopping
    though i did slow up
    to be more precise
    and detailed
    catch a close up
    or maybe get a glimpse
    nobodies hoe
     but the game got pimps
    i stay exempt
    and stand in the light
    fame got glimmer
    but my glow just right
