MUSIC, MY LIFE & MORE...

What i Think of Djing

 today…

I’ve never sought to be true to anything more than art and it’s creation. The desire to monetize, for me has always come from being passionate about my crafts and the desire to seek the opportunity to share them with those who value the creation and organization of what is created. We are at an interesting place where fame and the pursuit of being famous has seemingly over shadowed the culture of ideation and creation. Djing particularly has now become akin to being a server in a restaurant. I don’t blame technology for creating more convenient ways to bring music to people. I blame technology for creating the space that says everyone should partake in creating a narrative for normalizing the need for attention doing … nothing. With the creation of music that has spanned beyond the time of any living human being, the way of social media has dwindled the value of the medium and those who seek to create and perform from a genuine space of passion to nothing more than serving an under average meal. To me this suggest venue owners can now make djs staff members and pay an hourly rate close to servers, bartenders and line cooks (maybe). Of course providing minimal sound and dj equipment for those who seek to play top 40s, to those who simply want to hear music. This would be basic audio that is standardized by pop culture. The thought of this is painful, writing it is a whole level of low. As a lover of musicians, singers, songwriters and the recording process of making this art, my association with djing has been to amplify sounds that showcase what I’ve considered as necessary as air. Djing was not my first love, though music has always been associated with the process of living. The process of djing for me has been akin to mixing colors, mediums, and materials to present to people. This could be considered service, but of original ideas over duplicating.

I'm not new nor am I old. This has to be said out the gate. We should always be growing, expanding, changing, and of course inspiring. I have experienced quite a few obstacles as a woman artist, dj and now producer in this arena called Chicago. Oh I can most certainly share my thoughts and opinions on quite a few aspects of "the game". You may have witnessed some of those via Fb Live, Instagram and Youtube, of course. I definitely could rant about the countless male djs / producers, who wow us with talent, until we peek behind the curtain to find painful truths, that deflate massive egos. But not today.

Today we will simply address the gratefulness I feel to have been heard and listened to. Yes they are the same, yet different. People listen /  read our ramblings everyday, all day. Application is an entirely different action. It is mostly a dropped ball, you find on the platform where you acquired the "info". When people start to apply your ideas or inquire about your services in order to facilitate the tasks you advise them on, you get to be a part of their manifestations of goals. And I CANNOT EVER WAIT to see what the universe brings forth based on those shifting from comfort, in order to grow.

Pap Spencer, as some may well know, has been a culture conveyor long enough to closely associate with both Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles. He is a dj, producer, sound engineer and visionary. We have crossed paths more than a few times, as I have "tinkered" at production over the years. This past year, we pow wowed a few times. Pap engineered "Apocalyptic Conversations" for me last year and "The Smokers Church" last month. During that period we discussed quite a few untapped angles and resources for marketing music. Did I mention this started a year ago? lol

Yesterday, after our now weekly studio session, I left with another feather in my cap. After a whole year of waiting on a small bit of content from Pap, we sat and I was able to pull enough together to put a dent in the website that will house all things related to PUMF aka Paps Underground Music Factory. Yes this is a fete. Most artist understand creation. We do this to breathe. The business end can be a hard undertaking. Based on what I have experienced in recent years, I can testify that having these tools in the ever growing pond of djs, can only help further the infinite possibilities of even a JEDI MASTER LIKE  Pap Spencer.

    fathom spits

when i come to the jam
    know who i am
    aint bout the flim flam
no i dont give a damn
    about where you been
    or what you rocking
    when the tunes hit
    we'll see whats popping
    not stopping
    though i did slow up
    to be more precise
    and detailed
    catch a close up
    or maybe get a glimpse
    nobodies hoe
     but the game got pimps
    i stay exempt
    and stand in the light
    fame got glimmer
    but my glow just right
